Derick Watson

Academic Support Tutor

Derick Watson is an Academic Support Tutor at Empower Child Learning who is passionate about helping students build confidence, independence, and a lifelong love of learning. He earned degrees in Communication and Philosophy, and for the past three years has worked as a tutor and mentor for college students, supporting them in developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and academic skills.

Derick believes the best learning happens when students are empowered to discover solutions for themselves. Rather than simply providing answers, he focuses on teaching strategies that strengthen understanding, encourage independence, and build the confidence students need to succeed both in and beyond the classroom.

As a lifelong member of the local community, Derick is passionate about giving back by helping children and teens recognize their strengths and reach their full potential. His patient, encouraging, and individualized approach aligns with Empower Child Learning's strengths-based, neurodiversity-affirming philosophy.

Outside of work, Derick enjoys spending time with his family, making music, attending theater productions, and watching movies. He's also a dedicated Marvel fan and enjoys connecting with students through their shared interests to make learning engaging and fun.
